This exceptional 1887/6 Morgan Silver Dollar, attributed as VAM-2 “Jack Lee 2,” is named for Jack H. Lee, one of the most influential and respected figures in the study of Morgan dollar varieties. Lee was a pioneering numismatist whose meticulous research in the mid-20th century laid much of the groundwork for modern VAM attribution. Long before the widespread use of digital imaging, Lee documented die varieties through careful observation, photography, and comparison, identifying important overdates, doubled dies, and die markers that later became cornerstones of Morgan dollar scholarship.
The “Jack Lee 2” attribution refers to a specific die pairing of the famous 1887/6 overdate that Lee identified and cataloged, distinguished by clear remnants of the underlying 1886 beneath the final 7 and additional die diagnostics recognized by specialists. His work directly influenced later researchers, including Van Allen and Mallis, whose comprehensive system ultimately formalized VAM numbers.
