1798/7 Draped Bust Dime, 16 Stars Reverse — PCGS MS63 (Philadelphia)
A scarce and charismatic early U.S. silver rarity, this 1798/7 Draped Bust Dime displays the famed overdate created from a leftover 1797 obverse die punched with an unusually small “8.” The quirky numeral led Walter Breen to note that engraver Robert Scot sometimes omitted the final digit on working dies to avoid exactly this sort of overdate. Equally intriguing, the reverse die is the same design used on 1807 Quarter Eagles—an exceptional case of cross-denominational die usage that makes this variety especially desirable to advanced specialists.
