Scarce Carson City gold in desirable Mint State preservation, this 1892-CC Liberty Head Double Eagle is a certified PCGS MS62 example of a popular late-date frontier issue from the final years of the Nevada mint. With a modest mintage of just 27,265 pieces and a PCGS population of 74 in MS62, with only 15 finer at PCGS, it occupies a notably select position within the surviving census.
Designed by James B. Longacre, the Liberty Head double eagle presents the left-facing head of Liberty on the obverse, wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and encircled by thirteen stars, with the date 1892 below. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows, surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS, while the Carson City mintmark CC appears beneath the eagle. This is the classic Type Three Liberty double eagle format, with IN GOD WE TRUST placed above the eagle amid radiant rays.
The present MS62 specimen offers the strong commercial character and honest originality that specialists seek in Carson City gold. Both sides show warm yellow-gold color with softly frosted to satiny mint luster remaining across the fields and devices. Light bagmarks and scattered contact are consistent with the assigned grade, yet the major design elements remain bold, and the overall appearance is attractive for the issue. The strike is typical to slightly better than typical for the date, with Liberty’s hair detail and the reverse eagle showing pleasing definition. The coin retains solid eye appeal, especially desirable in a branch mint double eagle that so often comes encountered in circulated preservation.
Within the Liberty Head double eagle series, the 1892-CC holds an important place as one of the final Carson City twenties struck before the mint ceased coinage operations after 1893. Carson City gold has long enjoyed an outsized following among collectors, combining Old West romance with tangible scarcity. PCGS notes that the 1892-CC is scarcer in Mint State than its lower-mintage 1893-CC counterpart and was long considered quite rare in Uncirculated grades until European holdings came to light in the mid-20th century. Even so, most survivors are encountered in Extremely Fine or About Uncirculated grades, while true Choice and Gem Uncirculated pieces remain elusive.
Although not rare in an absolute sense, the issue is unquestionably scarce, and it becomes appreciably more challenging in Mint State. The certified population supplied here places this coin in a condition tier that advanced type collectors, Carson City specialists, and buyers of better pre-1933 gold will immediately recognize. It is a semi-key Carson City double eagle in upper-end collectible preservation, offering an appealing balance of historic significance, limited availability, and market popularity.
A handsome and highly collectible example of late Carson City coinage, this 1892-CC double eagle stands as an impressive representative of America’s classic gold era and a compelling addition to any serious cabinet of United States gold.
