1883-CC $5

A very rare and underrated Carson City half eagle, the 1883-CC ranks among the most elusive issues in the Liberty Head five-dollar series and is far scarcer than its modest profile might suggest.
This historic gold issue presents the classic Liberty Head design by Christian Gobrecht. The obverse features Liberty facing left, her coronet inscribed LIBERTY, framed by thirteen stars and the date 1883 below. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle with shield grasps an olive branch and arrows beneath the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and denomination FIVE D., with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a ribbon above. The Carson City mintmark, CC, appears below the wreath and above the denomination, a compact but powerful emblem of Western frontier coinage and one of the most collected mintmarks in American numismatics.
Certified PCGS XF45, this example displays the honest, even wear expected of the grade while retaining strong overall definition in the central devices and lettering. Liberty’s portrait remains bold, with the coronet inscription clear and the stars well outlined. The reverse eagle is likewise sharply appreciable, with shield lines, wing detail, and peripheral legends remaining distinct. The surfaces show a pleasing, original golden color with deeper honey-gold and lightly olive accents in protected areas, adding character and visual depth. Both sides offer solid eye appeal for the assigned grade, with the wholesome look advanced collectors seek in circulated Carson City gold.
The 1883-CC half eagle occupies an important place within the Carson City gold series. Struck at the famed Nevada branch mint during the great era of Western hard-money commerce, it comes from a facility whose output has long held a special fascination for collectors. Within the Liberty Head half eagle series, Carson City issues enjoy persistent demand, but the 1883-CC stands apart as a notably underrated rarity. Specialists have long recognized it as substantially rarer than the 1879-CC, 1880-CC, 1882-CC, and the Carson City half eagles of the 1890s, approaching the rarity of the celebrated 1881-CC.
With a mintage of just 12,958 pieces, this is a low-mintage issue with clear rarity credentials. PCGS reports a population of only 27 in XF45, with 90 finer, underscoring its limited availability in all grades and especially its appeal as an obtainable yet genuinely scarce collector coin. The issue is widely regarded as one of the sleepers of the series, and examples with original surfaces and attractive color are always in demand among date collectors, Carson City specialists, and buyers assembling meaningful sets of Liberty Head gold.
An appealing, problem-free 1883-CC $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle with true collector importance, this certified XF45 example represents a compelling opportunity to acquire one of the series’ most underrated Carson City rarities.
