This is a PCGS Graded Coin. You will receive the pictured coin. You are Buying a 1871 Two Cent Piece graded MS66 RD by PCGS and CAC Approved. The two cent series was issued from 1864 to 1873, with the last year only produced in proof format. The earlier years are generally more plentiful than the later issues, and the 1871 is an important condition rarity. This 1871 is one of the finest examples that PCGS has certified and presents a wonderful opportunity for advanced collectors. A highly attractive Premium Gem, this fully brilliant two cent piece exhibits frosty mint luster with bold design motifs. Truly very few scattered carbon flecks are evident on each side of this piece, but they are entirely trivial and fail to limit the numerical grade of this lovely piece. Population: 11 in 66 Red, 1 numerically finer. Tied with one other coin, from the famed Simpson Collection, for CAC Approval! (4/26). This is an excellent coin to add to your collection.
Coin Features:
PCGS graded MS66 RD CAC
CAC Approved, one of two MS66 RD coins approved
Known as a Two Cent Piece
Obverse: Heraldic Shield with Laureate and Arrows Motto Banner above
Reverse: United States of America near rim Wheat Wreath around Two Cents
Two Cent Pieces (1864-1873) The Two Cent piece was designed by James Longacre and struck in 1864 to 1873 by the Philadelphia Mint. The coins are 23mm in diameter and were struck with the same copper composition of the bronze Indian small cents. The reverse features the words 2 CENTS surrounded by an oak wreath. The obverse is a shield encircled by a laurel wreath and bears the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” on a ribbon across the top of the shield. This is the first time this inscription was used on a coin and was added due to intense religious sentiment during the Civil War. Cherished by collectors today, the Two Cent piece is one of the shortest-lived denominations in all of U.S. numismatics.
