1907 High Relief Twenty, Wire Rim MS65+ PCGS Ex: Maurice Saint-Gaudens Includes Letter of Provenance to the Saint-Gaudens Family
1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim, MS65+ PCGS. Ex: St Gaudens Family. The importance of a pedigree is not lost on advanced collectors of any series. However, few coins can match the unbroken chain of ownership of this impressive Gem High Relief twenty. A memo from the desk of Maurine Saint-Gaudens accompanies this lot, and the contents of this memo tell the story of the past 100+ years of this coin. "This coin reference: 1907 High Relief Twenty Dollar gold piece, PCGS Certification # 27477014, has been handed down to me from my grandfather Maurice Saint-Gaudens. After arriving from Paris, Maurice studied and worked with Augustus for a number of years. Subsequently, he went on to work for Cartier until he established his own jewelry business in San Francisco, California. This coin has been with the Saint-Gaudens family since it was minted. (signed) Maurine St. Gaudens" The cert number is now #53711078 as the coin was regraded since 2014 and has now received the grade MS65+ According to Ancestry.com, Maurice (1887-1965) was a second cousin of Augustus. The pedigree of this High Relief is comparable to the coins John Clapp ordered directly from the mints in the 1890s. It appeared at auction for the first time in the 2014 FUN Signature offerings by heritage, where it realized $64,625 in an ms65 holder, now in MS65+. Here, it appears with its history and accompanying letter of provenance intact. While other MS65+ Wire Rim High Reliefs exist, this piece is uniquely significant, and a one-of-a-kind heirloom of the family of its creator. The surfaces of this High Relief are all that anyone could want from a Gem. The strike details are complete throughout, including full separation of the lettering from the rim on the upper reverse. The wire rim is complete on the obverse and just over half complete around the reverse. As the grade indicates, there are no noticeable contact marks on either side. The surfaces show the warm, satiny mint luster that is expected of a High Relief. The overall preservation of this coin is a testament to the importance attached to it by the descendants of Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
