1854 25C Arrows Liberty Seated Quarter PCGS MS66
1854 25C Arrows
SKU: 56845217
A condition-census 1854 Arrows Liberty Seated Quarter, certified PCGS MS66 and distinguished by exceptional original peripheral toning.
The obverse presents Gobrecht’s classic Liberty Seated motif, with Liberty facing left, seated upon a rock and supporting a Union shield inscribed LIBERTY while holding a pole capped by a liberty cap. Thirteen stars encircle the periphery, with the date 1854 below, flanked by the distinctive arrows at the date that define this short-lived subtype. The reverse features a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows, encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination QUAR. DOL. This is the Philadelphia issue, struck without mintmark, and of the modified 1854 type in which the troublesome reverse rays were removed.
At the MS66 level, this piece stands at the top end of what collectors encounter for the date. The strike is sharp throughout the principal devices, with strong definition in Liberty’s drapery, the stars, and the eagle’s feather detail. Satiny-to-frosty mint luster remains vibrant beneath a handsome frame of multicolored toning concentrated along the borders. Electric blue, turquoise, gold, violet, and russet hues trace the rims on both sides, creating a dramatic visual contrast against the largely brilliant interiors. Surface preservation is commensurate with the lofty grade, with only the most inconspicuous marks visible and overall eye appeal far above the norm for the issue.
The 1854 Arrows quarter occupies an important place in the Liberty Seated quarter series. In 1853, the Mint reduced the weight of the silver quarter and added arrows at the date to signal the change; rays were also added to the reverse. Those rays, however, proved impractical in production, as they complicated metal flow during striking. Accordingly, in 1854 the Mint removed the rays while retaining the obverse arrows, producing the distinctive one-year Arrows, No Rays subtype represented here. With a Philadelphia mintage of 12,380,000 pieces, the date was produced in large numbers for circulation, and it remains a foundational issue for type and series collectors alike.
Although the date itself is obtainable in lower Mint State grades, true premium gems are a different matter. PCGS reports a population of just 10 examples in MS66, with 10 finer, underscoring the select status of this coin within the certified population. The issue is especially popular among collectors assembling high-grade Liberty Seated quarter sets, as well as those seeking visually impressive representatives of the short Arrows subtype. Pieces combining top-tier technical quality with such vivid original color are always in demand.
A beautifully preserved and visually arresting 1854 Arrows quarter, this PCGS MS66 example offers condition-census quality, important type status, and undeniable cabinet appeal.
