1793 Liberty Cap Half Cent, authenticated / graded / encapsulated by PCGS as Good details. It is a "details" coin, but for a special reason: imperfect planchet!
In the first year of U.S. mintage from the Federal Philadelphia facility, 1793, half cent planchets were prepared from as pure copper as good be forged - assumed to have been in the 90s percentage - but in the case of half cents, the planchets were cut down from state coppers, tokens, and British pence as well - indicating that the early Mint had to struggle to gain inventory. Evidently, this coin was minted on a planchet with gaps and tears. So the details grade is "on the Mint" and available to you as a coin with more valid a condition than verdigris, corrosion, jewelry mount, holes, or other damage - though we see tiny spots of corrosion from time dating from before this was kept as a collectible. After release, the coin clearly circulated until set aside, hence the Good or Very Good details; you see elements of each and parts where it should have details and they are missing - such as "AMERICA," almost worn out. The pedigree items of an old paper coin flip with notes is included - but we wish we knew who it was that owned this before.
