A conditionally scarce Civil War-era Quarter Eagle, the 1862 Liberty Head is far rarer in true Mint State than standard guides often suggest, and this PCGS MS62 example offers notably pleasing original color and solid overall eye appeal for the grade.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features Liberty facing left, her coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by 13 stars with the date 1862 below. The reverse presents the heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows, encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination 2 1/2 D. Struck at Philadelphia and therefore without mintmark, this issue represents the classic Liberty Head Quarter Eagle type in its mature pre-Civil War and Civil War-era form.
This Mint State 62 specimen displays an attractive warm yellow-gold appearance with softly reflective fields and appealing satiny luster. The strike is generally sharp, with strong definition in Liberty’s portrait, the coronet lettering, and the eagle’s central shield and wing detail. As expected for the assigned grade, light scattered abrasions and small contact marks are visible in the fields and around the devices, but the coin remains thoroughly uncirculated and offers a pleasing, honest presentation. The overall look is superior to many survivors of this challenging date, with balanced color and a distinctly original character.
The 1862 Quarter Eagle is a highly important issue within the Liberty Head gold series. Struck during the second year of the Civil War, it comes from a period when gold coinage saw heavy disruption in domestic circulation, and many pieces were either exported, melted, or carefully saved. As a result, this date has long enjoyed a reputation among specialists as one of the more elusive Philadelphia Quarter Eagles in strict Mint State. Indeed, advanced collectors recognize that while proofs are encountered with some frequency relative to the date, true business-strike uncirculated pieces are decidedly difficult.
Collector interest is further heightened by its specialized status within the series. The date is associated with reverse-type study, with New Reverse examples known for 1859, 1860, and 1861; the 1862 issue is part of this important transitional era in Liberty Head Quarter Eagle production. In the marketplace, demand remains consistently strong for original, certified Mint State examples, especially those with attractive color and problem-free surfaces.
PCGS reports a population of just 16 examples in MS62, with only 21 graded finer, underscoring the issue’s limited availability at this level. That places this coin firmly in the category of a low-population Civil War gold type and an especially desirable acquisition for collectors pursuing a high-quality Liberty Head Quarter Eagle set, a Civil War gold cabinet, or a carefully selected type collection.
An appealing and legitimately scarce 1862 Quarter Eagle, this PCGS-certified MS62 combines historical resonance, true Mint State preservation, and strong collector demand in one desirable gold issue.
