A conditionally scarce Civil War-era Quarter Eagle, the 1862 Liberty Head is far rarer in true Mint State than standard guides often suggest, and this PCGS MS62 example offers notably pleasing original color and solid overall eye appeal for the grade.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features Liberty facing left, her coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by 13 stars with the date 1862 below. The reverse presents the heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows, encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination 2 1/2 D. Struck at Philadelphia and therefore without mintmark, this issue represents the classic Liberty Head Quarter Eagle type in its mature pre-Civil War and Civil War-era form.
This Mint State 62 specimen displays an attractive warm yellow-gold appearance with softly reflective fields and appealing satiny luster. The strike is generally sharp, with strong definition in Liberty’s portrait, the coronet lettering, and the eagle’s central shield and wing detail.
