Superb Gem Full Head quality for this desirable 1926 Standing Liberty Quarter, certified PCGS MS66FH.
Struck at Philadelphia in 1926, this silver quarter represents one of the most admired designs in all of 20th-century United States coinage. Hermon A. MacNeil’s obverse depicts Liberty standing in a gateway, shield in her left arm and olive branch extended in her right, with LIBERTY above, IN GOD WE TRUST divided across the pedestal, and the date 1926 below. The reverse features a powerful flying eagle encircled by stars, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and QUARTER DOLLAR completing the design. The Full Head designation confirms notably complete definition in Liberty’s head detail, a feature of considerable importance to specialists in the series.
In MS66FH, this piece stands firmly in the upper echelon of surviving examples. The strike is impressively sharp, as expected for the designation, with strong central detail and especially pleasing definition on Liberty’s head and the reverse eagle’s feathering. Lustrous silver-white surfaces are accented by delicate champagne-gold undertones and faint peripheral patina, enhancing the coin’s overall visual presence. Surface preservation is notably choice for the issue, with only minimal marks consistent with the assigned grade and a refined, premium-quality appearance throughout.
The 1926 quarter occupies an important place in the later Standing Liberty series, a type that has long enjoyed strong collector loyalty for its artistic distinction and short production span. The Standing Liberty Quarter, issued from 1916 through 1930, remains one of the classic design types of the American silver series, and coins with Full Head detail are especially coveted due to the series’ frequent strike softness. Philadelphia issues of the mid-1920s are popular with both type collectors seeking a high-grade representative and date collectors building advanced sets.
With a mintage of 11,316,000 pieces, the 1926 is not rare in an absolute sense, but sharply struck Superb Gems with Full Head detail are distinctly scarce and avidly pursued. PCGS reports a population of just 54 examples in MS66FH, with only 21 finer, underscoring the select status of this coin within the certified census. That combination of technical grade, Full Head designation, and attractive original eye appeal places it in a highly collectible tier of the market.
An outstanding opportunity to acquire a premium certified Standing Liberty Quarter that combines superior preservation, strong strike, and enduring series appeal.
