The 1908-S Twenty dollar gold double eagle is part of a series of Saint Gaudens gold double eagle coins struck from 1908-1933. Struck in San Francisco and designated as a Business (MS) strike, this coin is made of 90% gold; 10% copper from a mintage of 22,000 struck.ne of the semi-key dates in the series, the 1908-S Saint-Gaudens $20 is much more common in circulated grades than in Mint State, with well fewer than 500 pieces estimated to survive in uncirculated grades. Of those that do, the vast majority less than MS63. A handful are known in the grades of MS65 or better, and these trade for huge premiums.
Obverse: Liberty is portrayed standing on a rock, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The word LIBERTY appears on the top periphery surrounded by stars. The date is stamped on the right side of the coin, just above the rock.
Reverse: A crescent sun appears at the bottom as if rising on the horizon with long rays extending to the top of the coin. A flying eagle covers the central portion, atop the rays. The words UNITED STATES oF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS appear on the top periphery.
