1838 H10C No Drapery Large Stars Liberty Seated Half Dime PCGS MS67
1838 H10C No Drapery
SKU: 36183238
A magnificent Superb Gem representative of the first-year Stars obverse Seated Liberty half dime type, this 1838 No Drapery Large Stars example combines exceptional preservation with vivid multicolored toning and undeniable visual charisma.
The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, supporting a shield inscribed LIBERTY and holding a pole topped by a cap, with the date 1838 below and a ring of large stars around the periphery. As a No Drapery issue, the folds at Liberty’s elbow seen on later emissions are absent, preserving the original subtype introduced before Christian Gobrecht’s design was further refined. The reverse displays the denomination HALF DIME within a laurel wreath, encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Struck at Philadelphia, this piece represents the Large Stars variety, readily distinguished within the 1838-dated emission and an important attribution point for specialists in the series.
Certified PCGS MS67, the coin is impressively well preserved for the issue and fully merits its lofty designation. The strike is sharp throughout, with strong definition on Liberty’s figure, shield lines, stars, wreath leaves, and lettering. Brilliant underlying mint luster remains vibrant beneath an appealing veil of natural toning. The obverse is especially dramatic, showing rich sunset-gold, amber, violet, and cobalt-blue coloration around the borders and fields, while the reverse exhibits softer sea-green, champagne, pale blue, and russet highlights. Surfaces are notably clean for the grade, with only the most trivial marks visible under close inspection, and the overall presentation is that of a premium-quality early Seated half dime selected for both technical merit and eye appeal.
The 1838 half dime holds special importance in the Seated Liberty series. In that year, stars were added to the obverse, bringing the half dime into alignment with the broader Seated Liberty silver family then circulating. Two major varieties are recognized for 1838: Large Stars and Small Stars. While the Small Stars issue is the scarcer of the pair, the Large Stars variety remains highly popular as the more obtainable representative of this transitional first-year design. Collectors pursuing type coins, early Seated Liberty issues, or complete date-and-variety sets all recognize the importance of the 1838 No Drapery subtype as a foundational entry in 19th-century U.S. silver coinage.
With a mintage of 2,225,000 pieces, the 1838 Large Stars No Drapery half dime is available in lower grades, but sharply conditioned Superb Gems are a very different matter. PCGS reports a population of just 6 examples in MS67, with only 7 finer, underscoring the select status of this coin within the certified population census. High-grade, richly toned early Seated half dimes enjoy consistent demand, particularly when they pair top-end preservation with memorable color and strong originality.
An elite condition census example of a classic first-year Seated Liberty type, this 1838 H10C No Drapery Large Stars is a compelling acquisition for the advanced collector seeking beauty, status, and historic significance in one small silver rarity.
