A celebrated overdate rarity with exceptional definition, this 1918/7-S Standing Liberty Quarter is certified PCGS MS64 Full Head, a highly desirable Mint State example of one of the classic keys to the 20th-century quarter dollar series.
The Standing Liberty Quarter, designed by Hermon A. MacNeil, remains among the most admired motifs in American numismatics. The obverse presents Liberty standing in a gateway, olive branch extended in her right hand and shield raised in her left, with LIBERTY above and IN GOD WE TRUST divided across the field. The date below shows the famous 1918/7 overdate, created when a 1917-dated die was repunched with 1918. The San Francisco mintmark appears to the lower left of the pedestal. On the reverse, a boldly rendered eagle flies in open space, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and QUARTER DOLLAR, the composition embodying the dynamic artistry that defines the type.
This MS64FH representative offers strong visual quality for the issue. The strike is notably sharp in the areas collectors value most, as confirmed by the coveted Full Head designation, with Liberty’s head details distinctly brought up. Both sides retain appealing mint luster beneath soft silver-gray surfaces accented by light champagne-gold and faint olive hues. The fields and central devices are well preserved for the grade, and the overall appearance is impressively clean and balanced, with the eye appeal expected of a premium near-Gem survivor.
Within the Standing Liberty Quarter series, the 1918/7-S is one of the most famous and sought-after issues, recognized alongside the principal key dates of the set. Its dramatic overdate status gives it importance far beyond a simple mintage rarity, and it has long been a centerpiece coin for advanced collectors of 20th-century U.S. type and series coinage. The Standing Liberty series itself enjoys enduring popularity thanks to its short run, artistic merit, and the challenge presented by sharply struck, high-grade examples.
Collector demand for the 1918/7-S is consistently strong, particularly in Mint State and especially with Full Head detail. Examples become markedly more elusive at this level of preservation, and this coin’s certified population underscores that scarcity: PCGS reports just 4 examples in MS64FH, with only 2 finer. That combination of famous status, conditional rarity, and premium strike quality places this piece in an elite tier for the issue.
A classic American overdate of undeniable importance, this 1918/7-S Standing Liberty Quarter offers rarity, technical quality, and outstanding collector appeal in equal measure.
