1662 2PENCE OAK TREE AU55 PCGS CAC EX FORD U.S. Colonial Issue
This 1662 Oak Tree Twopence, certified AU55 by PCGS and approved by CAC, presents as an exceptional survivor of early Massachusetts silver, combining strong technical quality with notable character. The obverse, as typically encountered for the issue, is off-center, yet the peripheral legends remain bold and legible even where portions extend toward or slightly beyond the flan, and the iconic oak tree is sharply rendered with well-defined branches and trunk detail. The surfaces display deep silver-gray coloration enlivened by subtle undertones of violet and green-gold, with lingering luster visible in the protected areas that underscores the coin’s solid About Uncirculated preservation. The reverse is particularly well-centered and crisply struck, with the denomination and surrounding pellets clear and evenly impressed, providing an attractive contrast to the more irregular obverse alignment. Overall surface quality is strong for the type, with honest circulation wear confined mainly to the highest points and no distracting impairments, aligning well with the Ford XII description of “Extremely Fine” and explaining PCGS’s slightly higher assessment. At 12.7 grains and attributed as Noe-29, W-240, R.6, this is an important and eye-appealing early American silver issue, further distinguished by its inclusion in the 2010 Guide Book and a notably small CAC population of just 2 approved examples at the grade, with only 4 finer. Aside from a R.6 and pedigreed to the John J Ford collection, it is also traced back to F.C.C Boyd. This exact example sold in 2010 for $11,500 and almost no CAC has sold in the past decade. Considering an AU50 CAC would cost around $9K-$10K as offered on the market today, this has one of the best pedigree for this series as well is one of the best struck example for the series, we cant recommend this enough.Pedigree: Ex: F.C.C.
