1855 $20 AU58+ PCGS CAC Liberty Head Double Eagle
POP 1 - The 1855 Liberty Head Double Eagle is a popular early Type I survivor that reflects the originality and wholesome surface quality advanced collectors seek for a Gem slider. Both obverse and reverse display rich, deep honey-gold to apricot coloration with a soft, natural glow. Nearly full mint luster remains active across each side. Historically, the issue carries added importance as 1855 marked the first year in which the San Francisco Mint outproduced Philadelphia in double eagle coinage, a pivotal shift driven by California Gold Rush bullion that would define Liberty double eagle production for decades. With only about a 1,000 1855 $20 in all grades, this example has full luster, and superior eye appeal and we can see why this is the only AU58+ PCGS CAC for the date. A MS61 PCGS CAC today would cost close to $20,000, with this example clearly superior. With a typical AU58 PCGS CAC costing approximately $8,500, one would be hard pressed to find a better representative.
