A first-year Carson City classic with undeniable Old West appeal, this 1870-CC Liberty Seated Silver Dollar is certified PCGS XF40 and represents one of the most sought-after dates in the entire Seated Dollar series. With a tiny original mintage of just 12,462 pieces and a low certified population in mid-circulated grades, it is a cornerstone rarity for Carson City and Seated specialists alike, yet accessible enough to entice the broader collector.
Historical significance
Authorized by Congress on March 3, 1863, the Carson City Mint was built to serve the booming output of Nevada’s Comstock Lode, discovered in 1859 about 15 miles away. While famed for silver, the district yielded large quantities of gold as well, and during the mint’s life the face value of its gold coinage roughly matched that of its silver. The facility was operational by December 1869, with 1869-dated dies shipped from Philadelphia by October 21 of that year, and regular production commencing in 1870—making the 1870-CC the inaugural Carson City Seated Dollar. As a low-mintage, frontier-era issue, it has long been prized for both rarity and romance.
Collector and investor appeal
Scarce first-year “CC” dollar with historic Comstock Lode provenance

PCGS Population: 81 graded XF40; just 236 certified finer at PCGS, underscoring the issue’s scarcity in higher grades
A key opportunity for set builders of Carson City coinage and Seated Liberty Dollars (With Motto, 1866–1873)
Eye appeal and grade
PCGS XF40: Even, honest circulation with strong definition in Liberty’s shield lines and gown folds; bold legends and rims
Attractive original patina and problem-free surfaces for the grade, delivering the character seasoned collectors prefer

Why this coin
Combining first-year status, low mintage, and the storied “CC” mintmark, the 1870-CC Seated Dollar ranks among the quintessential Western silver dollars. Examples in PCGS-certified XF are legitimately scarce, and population data confirm how thin the supply becomes as quality rises. A premium addition to any advanced cabinet and an inspired centerpiece for collectors drawn to the lore of Carson City.
