1902-S Liberty $20 gold Double Eagle, authenticated / graded / encapsulated by PCGS as Select Uncirculated, MS-61. As you can see - and the pictures will help us describe this beautiful coin - the Liberty Head Double Eagle of 1850-1907 is among the United States' finest coins, as well as the largest in denomination and size. These Type 3 double eagles, of the period 1880s through 1907, can be found more often in Uncirculated and attractive condition than their earlier Type counterparts, but these too have condition rarities as the grade increases.
This coin, with solid orange-gold tone and bag marks befitting the grade, is actually scarce at uncirculated grades, and much more so going up the grade numbers. This can happen if luck just expended or bag-marked a lot of any one mintage. So it is for the 1902-S.
