A conditionally rare, fully detailed Superb Gem of this beloved 20th-century type, the 1929-S Standing Liberty Quarter offered here is certified PCGS MS67 Full Head, a lofty preservation level seldom encountered for the issue.
Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this 1929-S quarter represents the final-year design subtype of Hermon A. MacNeil’s Standing Liberty series, with Liberty standing facing forward between two gateway pedestals, olive branch extended in her right hand and shield at the ready in her left. The obverse bears LIBERTY above, IN GOD WE TRVST across the field, and the date 1929 below, with the S mintmark at lower left. The reverse features a boldly rendered eagle in flight, encircled by stars, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLVRIBVS VNVM, and QUARTER DOLLAR. As customary on this classic issue, the Latin inscription E PLVRIBVS VNVM translates to “Out of many, one.”
The present coin is a remarkable survivor, displaying the sharp definition demanded by the coveted Full Head designation, with Liberty’s head details distinctly brought up and the central design elements crisply impressed. Both sides retain attractive satiny to softly frosted mint luster beneath a light champagne-silver cast, with reflective highlights in the open fields. Surface preservation is notably strong for the grade, and the overall eye appeal is that of a superior, carefully preserved example. The strike is especially commendable for a San Francisco issue, where full detail can prove elusive.
The Standing Liberty quarter series, struck from 1916 through 1930, remains one of the most artistically admired programs in all of United States numismatics. MacNeil’s neoclassical motif combines elegance and strength, and the series has long attracted type collectors, date-and-mint specialists, and registry participants alike. Late-date San Francisco issues are particularly studied for strike quality and head detail, making certified Full Head examples especially desirable within the set.
With a mintage of 1,764,000 pieces, the 1929-S is not a major rarity in absolute terms, but it becomes decidedly scarce in Superb Gem preservation with Full Head definition. PCGS reports a population of just 29 examples in MS67FH, with only 3 graded finer, underscoring the coin’s status as a condition rarity for advanced collectors. In this echelon, demand is sustained by registry competition and by the enduring popularity of the Standing Liberty quarter as a classic silver type.
An exceptional late-date Standing Liberty quarter, this 1929-S PCGS MS67FH offers elite grade, impressive strike quality, and refined visual appeal—an outstanding acquisition for the advanced type collector or high-end series specialist.
