A scarce and highly coveted Carson City Morgan, this 1879-CC Silver Dollar certified PCGS MS64 offers the enduring appeal of a semi-key CC issue with handsome near-Gem preservation and strong collector demand.
Struck at the fabled Carson City Mint from a modest mintage of 756,000 pieces, this issue represents one of the more elusive entries in the Morgan Dollar series. The obverse displays George T. Morgan’s iconic left-facing Liberty portrait, crowned with a Phrygian cap, cotton blossoms, and wheat, encircled by 13 stars, the date 1879 below, and the legend E PLURIBUS UNUM above. The reverse features the heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and olive branch within a wreath, accompanied by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above; the distinctive CC mintmark appears below the wreath.
The present example is the more frequently encountered non-rusted mintmark variety rather than the so-called “Capped Die” or “Capped CC” issue. In MS64, the coin presents with notably attractive surfaces for the grade. Bright silver-white luster remains ample across both sides, accented by faint champagne-gray peripheral tint and reflective fields that enhance the overall eye appeal. The strike is generally sharp, with well-defined hair detail above Liberty’s ear and strong reverse feather and wreath definition. As expected for the assigned grade, a few scattered contact marks and light abrasions are visible, most notably in the open obverse fields and on the cheek, but they do not materially detract from the coin’s pleasing, original appearance.
Within the Morgan Dollar series, Carson City issues occupy a special place in the numismatic imagination. Coins from this frontier mint combine Old West romance with consistently strong market recognition, and the 1879-CC stands out as one of the scarcer and more desirable dates in the entire CC run. It is a classic semi-key Carson City dollar, avidly sought by both date collectors assembling complete Morgan sets and specialists pursuing the historic Nevada mint output.
Population data further confirms its desirability. PCGS reports 780 examples in MS64, with only 218 graded finer. While hundreds of pieces have been certified in this grade range, sustained demand for Carson City Morgans keeps premium-quality survivors in steady demand. Importantly, no examples have been certified above MS66, underscoring the absolute condition ceiling for the issue and reinforcing the appeal of this attractive near-Gem representative.
A historic and eminently collectible Carson City Morgan, this 1879-CC PCGS MS64 is an excellent acquisition for the advanced type buyer, the Morgan specialist, or any collector seeking a classic Silver Dollar with rarity, character, and enduring market strength.
