1859-S 25C Liberty Seated Quarter PCGS XF45
1859-S 25C
SKU: 9639850
An important early San Francisco Seated Quarter, the 1859-S is a notable semi-scarce issue that becomes genuinely rare in upper circulated grades, with this PCGS XF45 example representing an especially desirable survivor.
The obverse presents Liberty seated on a rock, supporting a Union shield and holding a pole capped by a Liberty cap, encircled by thirteen stars with the date 1859 below. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle with shield displays outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch, with the denomination QUAR. DOL. beneath and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, the issue carries the characteristic historical appeal of early branch mint silver from the Gold Rush era.
Certified XF45 by PCGS, this coin displays the honest, well-balanced wear expected of the grade, with all major design elements remaining bold and clearly defined. The devices retain strong central detail, and the legends are sharp. Light silver-gray coloration with deeper accents in the protected areas enhances the coin’s original appearance, while the surfaces appear pleasing for the grade. This is the kind of circulated example advanced collectors seek when extreme rarity in higher grades places finer pieces beyond reach.
Within the Liberty Seated Quarter series, the 1859-S occupies a particularly intriguing position. Its mintage of 80,000 pieces is modest, similar to the 1857-S, yet the issue is dramatically more elusive at the upper end of the condition census. Unlike the 1857-S, which is known in Mint State, the 1859-S remains unknown in Uncirculated condition. The reason for this striking absence is uncertain, but it has long elevated the date’s status among specialists in Seated coinage and collectors of early San Francisco issues.
Collector demand is reinforced by its limited certified population. PCGS reports a population of just 7 examples in XF45, with only 8 graded finer, underscoring the issue’s scarcity in this range. Although not a classic key-date by mintage alone, it is widely regarded as a semi-key issue in the series and one that becomes exceptionally difficult to obtain with this level of preservation and eye appeal. Its combination of branch mint origin, low surviving high-grade population, and strong specialist demand gives it enduring numismatic importance.
A highly collectible example of a fascinating and conditionally rare San Francisco quarter, this 1859-S Liberty Seated issue offers the kind of rarity, history, and series significance that advanced collectors consistently prize.
