1852-O 10C Liberty Seated Dime PCGS MS63
1852-O 10C
SKU: 55479048
A pleasing and increasingly elusive New Orleans Seated dime in Mint State, this 1852-O Liberty Seated Dime is certified PCGS MS63 and offers notable visual appeal for the issue, enhanced by richly original multicolored toning.
The obverse displays Liberty seated left upon a rock, supporting a Union shield inscribed LIBERTY and holding a pole topped by a Liberty cap, all encircled by thirteen stars with the date 1852 below. The reverse features the denomination ONE DIME within a laurel wreath, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the New Orleans mintmark O placed beneath the denomination. Struck before the introduction of arrows at the date in 1853, this is a classic pre-Civil War silver type from the important southern branch mint.
In MS63, the coin presents as a choice uncirculated representative with strong eye appeal. Both sides retain ample mint luster beneath vivid natural toning in copper-gold, rose, violet, and blue shades, particularly bold on the reverse where the colors frame the central devices attractively. The strike is well defined for the issue, with Liberty’s drapery and the wreath elements showing solid definition, while the surfaces exhibit the level of minor contact consistent with the assigned grade. Overall, it is an appealing and original coin with the kind of color and preservation that sets it apart from more typical survivors.
The 1852-O dime occupies an important position within the Liberty Seated series. Although the recorded mintage of 430,000 pieces is not low in absolute terms, the issue is distinctly difficult to locate in true Mint State, as comparatively few examples were set aside at the time of issue. New Orleans silver of the early 1850s has long attracted specialists for its branch mint character, and this date is recognized as a semi-scarce entry that becomes decidedly more challenging in uncirculated grades. As noted by Liberty Seated specialists, only two reverse die marriages are known for the year, differentiated most readily by the size and form of the mintmark.
Certified examples at this level are limited. PCGS reports a population of just 9 pieces in MS63, with only 7 graded finer, underscoring the issue’s scarcity in upper Mint State and its desirability among Seated dime collectors, New Orleans branch mint enthusiasts, and type buyers seeking an original, colorful representative. Coins such as this, with attractive toning and certified quality, are avidly pursued whenever offered.
A handsome and collectible 1852-O Seated Dime, this Mint State New Orleans issue combines scarcity, originality, and eye appeal in a highly desirable mid-19th century silver format.
