A Gem Carson City first-year Morgan of exceptional appeal, this 1878-CC dollar graded PCGS MS66 combines the enduring romance of the Nevada mint with the strong visual presence that has made early CC dollars perennial favorites.
The obverse presents George T. Morgan’s left-facing Liberty portrait crowned with a Phrygian cap, cotton blossoms, wheat, and the inscribed ribbon LIBERTY, with E PLURIBUS UNUM above and the date 1878 below. The reverse features the familiar heraldic eagle with wings spread, clutching arrows and olive branch within a wreath, accompanied by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and the motto In God we trust. The coveted CC mintmark below the wreath instantly identifies the issue as a product of the Carson City Mint, one of the most avidly collected branches in all of American numismatics.
This MS66 example is firmly within the Gem category and offers the bright, frosty-white appearance so prized in the series. Luster remains vivid across both sides, enlivening the satiny silver surfaces with strong cartwheel effect. The strike is pleasing overall, with well-defined central devices and crisp border dentils. As expected for the grade, the fields and major design elements are well preserved, while only a limited number of minor contact marks and light abrasions are visible on close inspection, most notably in the open fields and on Liberty’s cheek. The overall eye appeal is that of a premium, highly collectible Carson City Morgan with clean, attractive surfaces and strong visual balance.
The 1878-CC is a historic issue: the first Morgan dollar struck at Carson City and among the earliest silver dollars produced there after the transition away from trade dollar coinage. As Q. David Bowers noted, the Carson City Mint had prepared hundreds of thousands of planchets by March 1878, but delays in the delivery of updated dies from Philadelphia postponed production. Once dies arrived on April 16, coinage commenced shortly thereafter, with the mint’s presses ready to turn out substantial quantities. Thus, the 1878-CC stands at the beginning of the Carson City Morgan dollar story, linking the great Comstock-era silver coinage directly to one of the most collected and romantic chapters in U.S. Mint history.
With a mintage of 2,212,000 pieces, the 1878-CC is not rare in an absolute sense, but it is always in demand as a first-year Carson City issue. In Gem preservation, the picture becomes much more selective. PCGS reports a population of 383 pieces in MS66, with only 66 graded finer, underscoring the issue’s growing scarcity at this upper tier. That combination of Carson City popularity, first-year status, and condition rarity ensures steady collector competition. It is a staple coin for advanced Morgan specialists, CC mint enthusiasts, and type collectors seeking a premium branch-mint silver dollar.
A boldly attractive, certified Gem from one of the most storied mints in American numismatics, this 1878-CC Morgan Dollar is an outstanding acquisition for the collector who values history, quality, and lasting market appeal.
