Description
1911-D gold $2 1/2 quarter eagle, "Weak D," authenticated / graded / encapsulated by PCGS as AU-58 with CAC green sticker endorsement. This rarity, little sister to the Strong D, is itself a TOP POP in the Condition Census.
The 1911-D is a key date, the most key date, in the Indian quarter eagle series of the 1908-1929 final series of the U.S. quarter eagle. 55,600 were minted; under 8,000 remain existent today. Once a heavily circulated coin, 130 years of economic progress meant that this coin no longer had a key circulation purpose, but by the 1920s was sought after in banks as presents come Christmastime or youths' birthdays. Much has been written about the "strong D" main variety and its rarity and price. This specimen is of the "Weak D" variety; you can barely see it. (by the way, the Indian coin features are recessed into a straight flat planchet; but mintmarks were punched into dies the usual way, and so emerge from flat planchets the usual coin way)
We pursued this 1911-D G$2 1/2 because we recognized its place on top of the PCGS Condition Census (uncirculated 1911-D Weak Ds may be out there, but no one seems sure where) and that CAC had endorsed it during its sticker heyday as special for the grade. We note the tilted mounting of the coin, and this is a good candidate for CAC crossover, so we'll offer it up for now, but you may see it again if taken down for CAC crossover. Meantime, enjoy considering, as you could keep this or try a CAC crossover on your own! Shipped free with signature delivery as, well, you just have to with this one!
