Superb Gem quality for the date, this 1925 Buffalo Nickel is a visually impressive Philadelphia issue certified PCGS MS67, combining elite preservation with the enduring appeal of James Earle Fraser’s iconic Indian Head and bison design.
The obverse presents the celebrated right-facing Native American portrait, with LIBERTY boldly placed at the right border and the date 1925 below. Fraser’s composite portrait remains one of the most artistically admired designs in United States coinage, conveying remarkable sculptural depth and realism. The reverse features the massive American bison standing atop a raised mound, encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination FIVE CENTS. Struck at Philadelphia, this example is a classic representative of the beloved Type Two Buffalo Nickel format.
In MS67, the coin resides firmly in the Superb Gem category, and the present piece displays the sharp overall definition and frosty luster expected of a high-end survivor. Both sides show notably clean surfaces for the issue, with only the most trivial signs of contact visible under close inspection. The strike appears pleasing and well above average, particularly in the central devices, while the fields retain an attractive satiny-to-frosty brilliance. Subtle champagne-gold and pale silver-gray patina along portions of the peripheries enhances the already strong eye appeal and gives the coin an elegant, original look.
The 1925 Philadelphia Buffalo Nickel is semi-common in circulated grades but becomes decidedly more challenging in upper Mint State levels. Within the Buffalo Nickel series, it occupies a desirable position as a somewhat scarce coin in Mint State and a notably tougher issue in Gem preservation than many collectors initially expect. Fraser’s design, introduced in 1913, remains one of the cornerstones of 20th-century U.S. numismatics, and high-grade early-date Philadelphia pieces continue to enjoy sustained demand from type collectors, date-set enthusiasts, and registry participants alike.
Certified examples in this grade are scarce. PCGS reports a population of 67 in MS67, with just 6 finer, underscoring the select status of this survivor within the certified census. While not a major key or semi-key date in the traditional sense, the issue is far from common at this lofty level, and premium-quality pieces with this combination of preservation, strike, and eye appeal are consistently sought after.
A high-end certified Buffalo Nickel with strong visual presence and limited availability in the grade, this 1925 PCGS MS67 is an outstanding opportunity for the advanced collector of classic United States coinage.
