Superb Gem quality for this perennially popular Walking Liberty type, a 1942 Philadelphia half dollar certified PCGS MS68 and ranked among the finest survivors of the issue.
Adolph A. Weinman’s celebrated obverse presents Liberty striding confidently toward the rising sun, draped in the American flag and bearing branches of laurel and oak, with LIBERTY at the rim, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST at right, and the date 1942 below. The reverse features a powerful perched eagle with wings partly raised on a rocky crag beside a mountain pine sapling, accompanied by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and HALF DOLLAR. Long regarded as one of the most artistically accomplished designs in the entire U.S. federal series, the Walking Liberty half dollar remains a cornerstone of 20th-century American numismatics.
The present coin fully merits its lofty Mint State designation. Strike definition is strong throughout, consistent with the issue’s reputation for quality production, with Liberty’s central details and the eagle’s feathering displaying impressive clarity. Brilliant satiny-frosty luster remains vibrant across both sides, while the surfaces are notably well preserved for the grade. Delicate peripheral toning adds an especially attractive visual accent, showing warm gold, amber, and faint iridescent highlights around portions of the rims, while the centers remain predominantly silver-white. The overall eye appeal is that of a carefully preserved, high-end example selected for both technical quality and visual charm.
Within the Walking Liberty series, the 1942 Philadelphia issue is recognized as one of the most obtainable dates in Mint State and Gem levels, along with the 1943 and 1946-D. That said, true condition rarity emerges sharply at the uppermost levels. Coins certified at MS68 occupy elite territory where even this otherwise available date becomes highly desirable, as surface quality, luster, and eye appeal must align to an exceptional degree. As such, this piece offers collectors the opportunity to acquire a common-date issue elevated into a conditionally rare class.
PCGS reports a population of just 21 examples in MS68, with only 2 finer. That places this coin firmly within the top tier of known certified survivors and ensures strong appeal to advanced registry participants, high-grade type collectors, and specialists assembling a premier Walking Liberty set. The combination of a famous design, near-top population standing, and attractive original color only enhances its desirability.
An outstanding near-finest certified 1942 Walking Liberty half dollar, offering exceptional technical quality, vivid originality, and undeniable registry-caliber appeal.
