A highly appealing early Capped Bust Half Dollar, this 1813 O-101a 50 C. over UNI variety is certified PCGS AU55 and offers the kind of originality, character, and specialized variety interest that advanced early half dollar collectors prize.
Struck at Philadelphia, the obverse presents the familiar John Reich portrait of Liberty facing left, wearing a capped headband inscribed LIBERTY, with the date 1813 below and thirteen stars arranged around the border. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows, encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the denomination expressed as 50 C. below and E PLURIBUS UNUM on a flowing banner above. This piece is attributed as Overton 101a, the popular 50 C. over UNI marriage, one of the collectible Red Book-type varieties of the year and a notable issue within the Bust Half Dollar series.
The present example is especially attractive for the grade. Both sides retain strong detail throughout Liberty’s hair, drapery, and the eagle’s plumage, with only moderate, even wear on the high points consistent with the AU55 designation. The strike is pleasingly sharp for the issue, with bold central definition and clear peripheral elements. Surfaces are notably original in appearance, showing soft silver-gray centers framed by rich olive-gold, steel-blue, and subtle amber toning near the rims. The overall eye appeal is excellent, enhanced by wholesome color and an absence of distracting impairments.
Bust Half Dollars of the 1807-1836 era remain among the most actively collected of all early United States silver types, admired for their artistry, historical significance, and extensive die-variety landscape. The 1813 50 C. over UNI reverse variety holds special appeal because of its visible denomination blunder, making it desirable not only to date collectors but also to specialists pursuing Red Book and Overton varieties. As an early Federal silver issue produced during the Madison administration and in the midst of the War of 1812 period, it also carries strong historic resonance.
Certified examples of this exact attribution in Choice About Uncirculated grades are elusive. PCGS reports a population of just 3 pieces in AU55, with only 3 finer, underscoring the limited availability of this variety at such an attractive preservation level. That combination of certified scarcity, advanced die marriage status, and strong visual quality should ensure sustained collector demand.
An original and beautifully toned 1813 Capped Bust Half Dollar, this O-101a 50 C. over UNI is a compelling acquisition for the early half dollar specialist, type collector, or discerning cabinet seeking a premium certified example.
