Description
CHOICE LUSTROUS SURFACES. ONLY THREE MS63 COINS GRADED HIGHER AT PCGS. The 1839 is the final Classic Quarter Eagle struck in the Philadelphia Mint, and it is also the rarest. Only 27,021 pieces were struck - a limited total that confirms that much of the gold bullion that the Mint obtained from melted old-tenor gold coins had been converted into Classic Quarter Eagles and Half Eagles in earlier years. Even circulated 1839 Quarter Eagles are scarce coins that are not offered with any degree of frequency in today's market. PCGS and NGC combined report just 10 Mint State coins, the finest of which are a pair of MS-63s at NGC (September/2007).
