With an original mintage of just 5,000 business strikes, the 1882 is an understandably desirable issue among collectors and investors alike. The typically encountered example is Mint State, which strongly suggests that this issue did not see widespread circulation. Although a decent number of the survivors are in fairly high grades, there are fewer Superb Gem 1882 Gold Dollars in the market than there are for such other issues in this series as the 1881 and the lower-mintage 1880.
