James had earned folk hero status as a bandit of thepeople who, like Robin Hood, would rob from the rich and give to the poor,though the latter action is not supported by any evidence. James would meet hisend when a reward offered by Missouri Governor Crittenden was enough to turnone of his gang members. While planning their next heist in a secluded cabin,Ford shot Jesse James in the back of the head. Ford was given a portion of thereward and pardoned of his crimes by Crittenden, but condemnation of hisactions by the people caused Ford and his brother to flee the state. This 1882gold dollar may have been part of the bounty that brought an end to theunlawful spree of Jesse James. <o:p></o:p>
