Nineteen hundred and one is the second-to-last year in which the Philadelphia Mint struck proof Quarter Eagles with a cameo finish, and most examples have appreciable field-to-device contrast. The 1901 has the highest mintage in the proof Liberty Quarter Eagle series. While examples are encountered fairly regularly in today's market, most grade no finer than Proof-65 on the numeric grading scale. In addition, ever lower-grade coins are rare in an absolute sense. Superb Gems, of course, are exceedingly rare.
