Description
GEM ROMAN FINISH PROOF SURFACES. ONLY 682 STRUCK. CAC. Introduced in 1909, the Philadelphia Mint also employed the Roman Gold finish to deliver 682 proof Quarter Eagles in 1910. The astute buyer will immediately notice that this mintage figure is the largest in the proof Indian Two-and-a-Half series by a wide margin. (The next-highest mintage is that of the 1908 at only 236 coins.) Either Mint employees made an erroneous entry in the record books, or most of the coins struck were destroyed as unsold, because the 1910 is much rarer than the original mintage might suggest. We believe that only 75-100 coins have survived.
