Description
SATIN SURFACES WITH ROSE/BLUE IRIDESCENT TONING. TIED FOR HIGHEST GRADED AT NGC. The Mint used one obverse die and two reverse dies to strike approximately 36,640 Draped Bust Dimes in 1801. This is an unusual issue for, while it is more plentiful than any other Dime struck from 1800-1804, the 1801 is a significant condition rarity even in the finer circulated grades. The vast majority of survivors grade Good-Fine, and it is obvious that this issue saw extensive circulation during the early decades of the 19th century. Problem-free VFs and EFs are rare, while the handful of AUs listed at PCGS and NGC represent the finest in technical quality that is usually obtainable in an example of this issue. There are probably no more than eight or 10 Mint State 1801 Dimes known, and they are fairly evenly divided between the JR-1 and JR-2 die varieties.
