A high mintage of 5.5 million pieces and the prevalance of circulated examples through the AU-58 level masks the true rarity of the 1917-S Reverse in Mint State. Few of these coins were set aside at the time of issue, and many of those that were display isolated areas of striking incompleteness on one or both sides. Finding an above-average strike is anything but an easy task, particularly if you are also looking for a coin that is fully lustrous and free of an excessive number of bagmarks.
