Description
GEM DEEP CAMEO WITH FROSTED DEVICES. ONLY 35 STRUCK DURING THE CIVIL WAR ERA. CAC. A mere 35 proof Gold Dollars flowed from the presses in the Phildelphia Mint during this, the first full year of the United States Civil War. Nearly half of the original mintage was probably melted as unsold or otherwise lost during the war, and we suspect that no more than 20 coins have survived in all grades. The obverse die used for this issue was employed solely in the production of proofs, and it continued in use every year through 1873, and again in 1875 and 1876.
