Description
CAPPED DIES. GEM CREAMY SATIN SURFACES. VIRTUALLY DEVOID OF MARKS. JUST A HANDFUL OF MS65+ COINS GRADED HIGHER. CAC. There are two major varieties of the 1879-CC Morgan Dollar, the Large CC and the Large CC/Small CC. The latter variety, which is also sometimes referred to as the Capped Die, is actually rarer even though it is not as popular with newer collectors. The reason many buyers focus on the Large CC variety when searching for an example of this semi-key date issue is because the mintmark area on Capped Die examples has a decidedly busy appearance. Apparently, Mint employees tried to efface the Small CC mintmark before entering the larger Cs into the die. Advanced specialists, however, are quite fond of the Capped Die variety, such numismatists also recognizing that examples are virtually unobtainable above the MS-64 grade level.
