Description
VERY CHOICE LUSTROUS SURFACES. ALMOST PROOFLIKE DUE TO THE BRIGHT MIRRORED FIELDS. TIED WITH TWO OTHER COINS FOR HIGHEST GRADED AT PCGS. The 1857-C has a fairly generous original mintage by Charlotte Mint standards, and survivors of the 31,360 pieces delivered have long been popular among gold type collectors. We caution buyers, however, that this is not the most plentiful C-mint Half Eagle in an absolute sense, as it is rarer than the 1847-C, 1849-C, 1850-C, 1852-C, 1853-C and 1858-C. High-grade (AU and Mint State) survivors are more elusive than those of the 1849-C, 1853-C and 1858-C issues.
