Description
WELL STRUCK, CHOICE AU SPECIMEN OF THE ONLY $3 GOLD COIN STRUCK AT THE DAHLONEGA MINT. ONLY 1,120 PRODUCED. THIS IS A KEY DATE TO THE $3 GOLD SERIES. A unique issue, the 1854-D is the only Three-Dollar gold piece struck in the Dahlonega Mint. This is a major numismatic rarity, particularly in grades at or above the AU-50 level. Only 1,120 pieces were originally struck, and survivors number just 100-125 coins in all grades (per Doug Winter, Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint: 1838-1861, 2003). The majority of those pieces extant grade VF or EF, and a properly graded AU is a challenging coin to locate in today's market. Mint State examples are of the utmost rarity with perhaps no more than 10 coins known at that level of preservation.
