Description
WELL STRUCK, SATIN LUSTROUS SURFACES. ONLY 90 OR LESS KNOWN TO EXIST TODAY IN ALL GRADES. JUST TWO COINS GRADED HIGHER AT PCGS. With approximately 45,588+ examples struck, the 1818 was able to survive in slightly greater numbers than most other Half Eagles of the rare and challenging Capped Head Left type. This is still an elusive issue in an absolute sense, however, and it is unlikely that more than 250 coins have survived in all grades. Of the three-known die marriages, BD-2 is seen most frequently in the market and, indeed, it is more plentiful than both BD-1 and BD-3.
