Description
WELL STRUCK LUSTROUS SPECIMEN. THE KEY DATE CARSON CITY DATE FOR THE $5 LIBERTY GOLD SERIES. LESS THAN 100 EXAMPLES BELIEVED TO EXIST TODAY IN ALL GRADES. ONLY FIVE COINS GRADED HIGHER AT PCGS. THE HIGHEST BEING A MS61. Commencing coinage operations in 1870, the Carson City Mint delivered 7,675 Half Eagles that year. With just 50-60 of these coins believed extant, the '70-CC is the rarest CC-mint Five in an absolute sense. It is also the fourth rarest of the 19 Carson City Mint deliveries in this series from a condition standpoint, as the vast majority of survivors grade no finer than VF. Poor striking detail and heavily abraded surfaces further add to the difficulty that one will certainly encounter when pursuing this frontier-era issue. Any problem-free, high-grade (AU or Mint State) example with good detail and minimally marked surfaces represents a fleeting buying opportunity in today's market.
