Description
GEM DEEP MIRRORED CAMEO PROOF. ONLY 35 STRUCK. ONLY COIN GRADED AS A DEEP CAMEO BY PCGS. SOLE HIGHEST GRADED AT PCGS. TROMPETER PEDIGREE. CAC. The 1862 is a low-mintage issue that was produced during the tumultuous Civil War era. Only 35 specimens were originally struck, many of which were either destroyed as unsold at year's end or were otherwise lost to today's numismatic buyers. We believe that only 15 examples are extant, a total that includes the two coins permanently impounded in the Smithsonian Institution and American Numismatic Society collections. The 1862 is equally as rare, yet not as widely appreciated, as the proof-only 1863. The former issue, therefore, is certainly one of the more underrated rarities in this proof gold series.
