Description
GEM LUSTROUS SURFACES. CONDITION CENSUS. JUST 3 COINS GRADED HIGHER AT PCGS. As the premier Dime in United States coinage history, the 1796 is an immensely popular issue among collectors and investors alike. It is also a rare issue from a market availability standpoint, a fact that also stems from its status as one of only two deliveries in the Draped Bust, Small Eagle Dime series. Federal records indicate that 22,135 Dimes were delivered in 1796. We believe that this figure is accurate, but also believe that an additional 10,244 Dimes bearing the date 1796 were struck through the first three months of 1797. As such, the total number of 1796 Draped Bust Dimes struck is most likely 32,379 pieces. A total of six die marriages are currently known, with JR-1 being the most plentiful and JR-5 the rarest.
