Description

Superb Mint State quality for this famous early overdate. Offered here is an 1811/10 Capped Bust Half Dollar certified PCGS MS64 and further approved by CAC, a highly desirable near-Gem representative of one of the most popular Red Book varieties in early United States silver coinage. The obverse features the familiar Capped Bust portrait of Liberty facing left, her cap inscribed LIBERTY and surrounded by thirteen stars, with the date 1811 below. As an overdate, this issue was struck from a die punched over a previously dated 1810 die, creating the collectible 1811/10 designation that has long attracted both type collectors and specialists in early half dollars. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows, encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with E PLURIBUS UNUM on a scroll above and the denomination 50 C. below. Struck at Philadelphia, as were all federal half dollars of the era, the coin represents the classic John Reich design that defines the early Capped Bust series. In MS64, this example stands at the threshold of Gem quality and presents accordingly. The strike is well above average for the type, with strong definition throughout Liberty’s hair curls, drapery, stars, and the eagle’s shield and feather detail. Luster remains ample and attractive across both sides, glowing beneath a refined overlay of natural toning. The surfaces display handsome peripheral coloration in warm rose-gold, champagne, olive-gray, and soft blue-violet hues, with especially pleasing iridescence near the rims. Preservation is notably strong for the assigned grade, and the CAC endorsement confirms the coin as a premium-quality example within the MS64 category. The 1811/10 half dollar occupies a special place in the early Bust Half Dollar series. Overdates are perennially collected as distinct issues, and this piece is among the best known and most sought-after early half dollar varieties. The Capped Bust half dollar series as a whole enjoys deep collector support, driven by its historical importance, large format, and extensive variety structure cataloged by Overton. Coins of this caliber appeal simultaneously to advanced type collectors, date collectors, and early federal specialists seeking problem-free Mint State material with exceptional originality. Population data further underscores its desirability. PCGS reports just 9 examples in MS64, with only 6 finer, placing this coin in a scarce upper tier of certified survivors. For a circulated type this date can be obtained with patience, but sharply preserved Mint State pieces with CAC approval are far more elusive and are avidly pursued whenever they appear. The combination of an iconic overdate, strong technical grade, and appealing original color gives this piece exceptional marketability. A premium certified example of a classic early American silver rarity, this 1811/10 Capped Bust Half Dollar offers the quality, originality, and collector prestige that advanced buyers seek.
