Description

An exceptional offering from the classic Matte Proof era, this 1916 1C Lincoln Cent (Type 1 Wheat Reverse) represents one of the key dates in early proof Lincoln collecting. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint and certified PCGS PR66BN with CAC approval, it combines rarity, originality, and visual allure in a single, highly collectible example. The 1916 Matte Proof Lincoln cent is famed for having the lowest mintage of the entire Matte Proof Lincoln cent series (excluding errors), with only 600 struck. Approximately half are believed to survive today, making it a true scarcity with enduring demand. While the 1909 V.D.B. remains the series’ ultimate rarity, 1916 stands as the second scarcest date and is widely recognized as particularly difficult in fully original, minimally disturbed color. This specimen is designated BN (Brown) and is especially compelling for its vibrant, nuanced toning. The coin displays dominant copper-gold surfaces with extensive iridescent blue and turquoise toning across both sides, complemented by subtle violet and rose highlights and a warm bronze-brown rim. The overall eye appeal is elevated by the layered, natural color progression so often associated with early proof storage, as period tissue paper packaging frequently introduced sulfur that encouraged attractive, long-term toning. Matte Proof 1916 cents are typically well struck, showing crisp definition and the distinctive texture expected of the format. Because many 1916 business strike cents can also appear unusually sharp and are sometimes mistaken for proofs, third-party authentication is strongly recommended—making this certified, CAC-approved example an especially confident choice for collectors.
