Description
Condition Census quality for the date, this 1934-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar is certified NGC MS67 and stands among the finest survivors of a popular Depression-era issue. Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design remains one of the most celebrated motifs in all of American coinage. The obverse depicts Liberty striding toward the rising sun, draped in the folds of the national flag and carrying branches of laurel and oak, with LIBERTY at the border, IN GOD WE TRUST at right, and the date 1934 below. The reverse presents a powerful perched eagle on a mountain crag beside a young pine sapling, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR, with E PLURIBUS UNUM at left. The San Francisco mintmark appears on the reverse below the branch. At the MS67 level, this example offers exceptional surface preservation for the issue. The coin displays strong mint frost and pleasing silver-white brilliance with light, natural patina and scattered dove-gray accents that frame portions of the devices. The strike is sharp overall, with Liberty’s central details and the eagle’s feathering showing commendable definition for the type. Only minimal abrasions are evident, and the overall eye appeal is that of a carefully preserved, high-end Mint State representative. The 1934-S belongs to the early branch mint issues of the Walking Liberty half dollar series, a set avidly pursued both by type collectors and by advanced date-and-mint specialists. Introduced in 1916, Weinman’s half dollar has long been admired for its artistic merit, and San Francisco issues from the 1930s occupy an important place in the series as surviving quantities in premium Mint State are far more limited than their original mintages might suggest. Coins of this era were heavily used in commerce, making Gem examples especially desirable today. Certified examples at this elite level are notably scarce. NGC reports a population of just 9 in MS67, with none finer at the service, a statistic that firmly places this piece in condition census territory for the date. While the 1934-S is not the rarest coin in the series in absolute terms, it becomes a significant condition rarity in such advanced preservation, and demand for high-grade Walkers remains consistently strong. A handsome and highly collectible San Francisco Walking Liberty half, this NGC MS67 1934-S combines classic design, superior preservation, and true upper-end scarcity in a way that will appeal to discerning collectors of exceptional United States silver coinage.
