Description

The 1800 Draped Bust Dollar “AMERICAI” is one of the most celebrated and instantly recognizable major varieties in the early American silver dollar series. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint and certified PCGS XF40, this historic issue combines strong collector appeal, important early U.S. Mint character, and a famous reverse die flaw that has made the AMERICAI variety a longtime favorite among Bust Dollar specialists. On the reverse, the diagnostic feature appears immediately after the word AMERICA, where a die flaw creates the appearance of an added “I.” Rather than an engraver’s misspelling, this is a fortunate and highly visible flaw, positioned in such a way that it mimics an intentional letter. Because the variety can be identified with the naked eye, it has long been recognized as a major collectible subtype within the Draped Bust Dollar series. The AMERICAI designation encompasses the two known Bolender-Bowers varieties, BB-191 and BB-192, both sharing the same distinctive reverse. Graded Extremely Fine 40 by PCGS, this example offers the balanced appeal that advanced collectors seek in early dollars: solid remaining detail, attractive originality, and clear visibility of the famous reverse feature. At this level, Liberty’s portrait and the eagle retain strong definition, while the surfaces often present the pleasing silver-gray patina and deeper antique accents that are especially desirable on early federal coinage. Scarcity further enhances its appeal. PCGS reports a population of just 19 examples in this grade, with only 54 finer, underscoring the issue’s limited availability in collectible mid-grade preservation. For collectors pursuing major early dollar varieties, this is a meaningful opportunity to acquire a certified representative of one of the most famous die varieties in the series.
