Description

A conditionally rare Superb Gem of this low-mintage Denver issue, the 1911-D Barber half dollar offered here is certified PCGS MS67 and combines exceptional preservation with notably pleasing eye appeal. The obverse presents Charles E. Barber’s familiar right-facing Liberty, laureate and capped, encircled by stars with IN GOD WE TRUST above and the date 1911 below. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle supports the Union shield, clutching olive branch and arrows beneath E PLURIBUS UNUM, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR around. The D mintmark appears below the eagle, identifying this as a Denver Mint striking of one of the better-known branch mint issues in the Barber half dollar series. This Superb Gem displays a sharp overall strike, with strong definition through Liberty’s wreath, cap, and facial profile, while the reverse shows impressive feather detail and bold definition in the shield and peripheral lettering. The surfaces are remarkably well preserved for the issue, with only the most trivial disturbances consistent with the lofty certified grade. Soft silver-white brilliance is enhanced by delicate champagne-gold, pale olive, and faint peripheral iridescent accents, lending the coin an especially appealing and original appearance. As is so often the case with high-end Barber halves, eye appeal is critical, and this piece stands apart with a refined, satiny glow and attractive natural color. The 1911-D is a low-mintage issue, produced to the extent of just 695,080 pieces. While the date is generally obtainable through Very Choice Uncirculated levels, true Gems are much scarcer, and Superb Gems are decidedly elusive. This is a date that has long attracted Barber half dollar specialists, particularly because many surviving Mint State examples are apt to be dull or uninspiring. A vividly original, high-grade representative such as this is therefore far more desirable than the mintage alone might suggest. Within the context of the series, the Barber half dollar remains one of the most avidly collected classic U.S. silver types, appreciated for its blend of 19th-century design aesthetics, branch mint diversity, and real condition rarity in upper Mint State grades. The 1911-D occupies a compelling position as a better Denver issue whose finest survivors are closely pursued by registry participants and advanced date collectors alike. PCGS reports a population of just 6 examples in MS67, with none finer. That census alone places this coin among the elite survivors of the issue and confirms its importance for collectors seeking top-tier quality. With no higher-graded examples certified, it represents a finest-known opportunity by the service and a significant prize for the advanced Barber half dollar cabinet. A beautifully preserved and highly desirable Superb Gem, this 1911-D Barber half dollar offers low-mintage status, finest-certified distinction, and outstanding visual appeal in a single premium collectible.
