Description

A richly preserved Gem from the final decade of the Seated Liberty half dime series. The 1857 Liberty Seated Half Dime, struck at Philadelphia, represents one of the most enduring and elegant small silver types of 19th-century American coinage. Christian Gobrecht’s obverse depicts Liberty seated on a rock, holding a Union shield and supporting a pole topped by a Liberty cap, with stars encircling the figure and the date 1857 below. The reverse features the denomination expressed within a laurel wreath as HALF DIME, a distinctive and refined presentation that defines the type. Though diminutive in size, the design offers remarkable intricacy and remains a favorite among specialists in early U.S. silver. Certified PCGS MS65, this example stands firmly in the Gem category, a level at which the type becomes notably more elusive and substantially more desirable. The strike is pleasing for the issue, with strong central definition and well-rendered peripheral elements. Lustrous surfaces support the grade, while the preservation is consistent with the designation, showing only minimal abrasions of the sort expected on a carefully selected Gem survivor. Eye appeal is a major strength, with bright silver surfaces likely complemented by delicate, original tinting and the crisp, balanced look advanced collectors seek in Seated coinage. The Seated Liberty half dime series enjoys broad collector support, appreciated both as a standalone specialty and as part of 19th-century type sets. By 1857, the denomination remained an important circulating silver issue in a rapidly expanding national economy, just a few years before the disruptions and transformations of the Civil War era. Coins of this period bridge the gap between the early federal series and the more modern issues that followed, giving the 1857 half dime a compelling place in the broader narrative of American numismatics. With a substantial mintage of 7,280,000 pieces, the date is obtainable in circulated grades, but true Gems are a different matter. PCGS reports a population of just 92 examples in MS65, with only 79 graded finer. That certified population under 100 underscores the issue’s relative scarcity at this level and confirms its status as a conditionally scarce offering within the series. Collectors assembling high-grade Seated Liberty sets or refined type collections will recognize the importance of securing premium, fully original pieces at this tier. A sharply defined and highly collectible Gem, this 1857 Seated Liberty Half Dime offers the quality, originality, and historic charm that continue to make the series so appealing.
