Description

A sharply defined Gem with Full Head detail, this 1929 Standing Liberty Quarter represents one of the most visually satisfying late-date issues of the celebrated type. Struck at Philadelphia, the obverse displays Hermon A. MacNeil’s iconic standing Liberty facing right, holding an olive branch in her extended left hand and a shield emblazoned with LIBERTY at her side. The surrounding legends read IN GOD WE TRVST and 1929, with the familiar border of stars framing the design. The reverse features a boldly rendered eagle in flight, encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLVRIBVS VNVM, and QUARTER DOLLAR. As customary for the series, the motto appears in its classical Latinized form, with V used in place of U. Certified PCGS MS65FH, this example combines Gem-grade preservation with the coveted Full Head designation, an important marker of strike quality on Standing Liberty Quarters. Liberty’s head details are distinctly brought up, and the reverse eagle shows strong central definition. Bright silver-white luster is complemented by subtle golden-brown peripheral toning and scattered deeper charcoal accents near the rims, creating a pleasing, original appearance. The surfaces are notably attractive for the grade, with only the lightest expected contact consistent with careful preservation. The 1929 issue belongs to the final design subtype of the Standing Liberty Quarter series, struck from 1925 through 1930 with the recessed date modification intended to improve wear resistance. The series remains one of the most artistically admired in all of American numismatics, prized for its classical design, short run, and the challenge of locating sharply struck pieces. Full Head coins are especially sought after, as many survivors display softness at Liberty’s head and shield area. With a mintage of 11,140,000 pieces, the 1929 is not a rarity in an absolute sense, but premium Gems with Full Head detail are substantially more selective and enjoy sustained collector demand. PCGS reports a population of 395 examples in MS65FH, with 199 finer, confirming its status as a condition-sensitive and highly collectible certified representative of the type. This is an appealing choice for collectors assembling a high-grade Standing Liberty set or seeking a standout Gem example of this enduringly popular design. A lustrous, well-struck, and attractive Gem, this 1929 PCGS MS65FH Standing Liberty Quarter offers the combination of technical quality, classic design, and collector demand that continues to define the series.
