Description

A pleasing survivor from the formative years of the San Francisco Mint, this 1857-S Liberty Head Half Eagle in PCGS VF30 represents a scarce and highly collectible early branch mint gold issue that is seldom encountered much finer. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Head Half Eagle features on the obverse a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by 13 stars with the date 1857 below. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield, clutching an olive branch and arrows, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around and the denomination FIVE D. beneath. As an 1857-S issue, this coin was struck at San Francisco during the early years of federal gold coinage production on the West Coast, and specialists recognize two mintmark sizes for the date. This example belongs to an issue long appreciated for its status as a challenging early-San Francisco Half Eagle. In VF30, the coin retains solid overall detail for the grade, with Liberty’s portrait and the reverse eagle clearly defined despite moderate honest circulation. The surfaces show the expected wear of the grade while remaining attractive and problem-free in appearance, with warm, original gold color that enhances its visual appeal. The strike is consistent with the issue, and the coin presents as a wholesome mid-grade example of a branch mint gold rarity that is more often pursued for its scarcity than for technical perfection. The 1857-S holds an important place within the Liberty Head Half Eagle series, especially among collectors of San Francisco gold and early branch mint issues. Produced during the Gold Rush era, these coins are direct products of California’s emergence as a center of American commerce and bullion coinage. The date is comparable in overall rarity to the 1855-S and 1856-S, and while a small number of About Uncirculated and occasional Mint State pieces have been observed, the grade level most often encountered by collectors is Very Fine to Extremely Fine. That makes a certified VF example such as this especially representative of how the issue is usually collected. With a mintage of 87,000, the 1857-S is far from common in today’s market, and its survival rate is predictably modest given heavy commercial use in circulation. PCGS reports a population of just 10 examples in VF30, with 180 graded finer. While available across multiple grade levels in absolute terms, collector demand for early San Francisco gold remains consistently strong, particularly for wholesome, original examples that offer an accessible entry into this challenging subset of Liberty Head gold coinage. An appealing and historically significant early San Francisco Half Eagle, this 1857-S combines branch mint character, solid certified quality, and enduring collector demand in one desirable gold issue.
