Description
A dramatic, naked-eye Doubled Die Obverse variety in superb Gem preservation, this 1972 Lincoln cent represents the celebrated major Type 1 doubled die of the series and is certified PCGS MS67RD. Struck at Philadelphia, this copper 1-cent piece displays the familiar Lincoln Memorial design introduced in 1959. The obverse features Victor D. Brenner’s right-facing portrait of Abraham Lincoln, with IN GOD WE TRUST above, LIBERTY at left, and the date 1972 at right. On this important doubled die variety, the diagnostics are bold and unmistakable: strong doubling appears on all four digits of the date, spread to the southwest; LIBERTY shows clear doubling to the south; and IN GOD WE TRUST exhibits pronounced doubling toward the east. The reverse presents the Lincoln Memorial with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the upper border, E PLURIBUS UNUM above the memorial, and ONE CENT below, the standard Type 3 Memorial Reverse used for the issue. The present coin is exceptionally well preserved for the designation. Full Red color blankets both sides in rich, fiery orange-gold tones, with bright original mint luster flowing evenly across the fields and devices. The strike is sharp, bringing out the doubled features with impressive clarity, while the surfaces show the clean, carefully preserved appearance expected of a premium MS67 example. Eye appeal is outstanding, pairing the dramatic variety with vibrant color and satiny brilliance. Among modern Lincoln cent varieties, the 1972 Doubled Die Obverse Type 1 holds a place of special importance. Although more than 10 doubled die varieties are known for the 1972 cent, only the Type 1 is recognized as the major issue and one of the standout errors in the entire Lincoln cent series. Its popularity stems not only from its status, but from the magnitude of the doubling itself, which is strong enough to be readily seen without magnification. That combination of major-variety status, immediate visual impact, and broad collector recognition has made it a perennial favorite with both Lincoln specialists and error-variety enthusiasts. Certified examples at this level are scarce. PCGS reports a population of just 98 in MS67RD, with only 11 graded finer, a notably limited supply for such a heavily collected modern variety. With an estimated 20,000 pieces extant, the issue is collectible in lower grades but becomes significantly more elusive in top-tier Red Mint State preservation, where demand remains consistently strong. A premier example of one of the most famous modern U.S. varieties, this 1972-P Doubled Die Obverse Type 1 Lincoln cent offers elite grade, vivid original color, and immediate collector appeal.
